The R.S McLaughlin Durham Region Cancer Centre
|
For most of us cancer is the most feared of
all diseases. Most have been touched by it
through family, friends, or our own personal
experiences. Cancer can affect any of us at
any time at any age and its prevalence tends
to increase with age.
One out of three people will be diagnosed with some form of cancer at some
time in their lives. Provincially cancer kills approximately 25,000 people annually and
incident rates are steadily increasing.
The good news is that in May 2007 the new R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional
Cancer Centre was opened to address the need. This new facility has expanded
existing cancer services that were scattered throughout the Lakeridge Oshawa site.
Chemotherapy, supportive care and cancer surgery are now located in one space.
Most importantly the Cancer Centre has brought radiation therapy to Durham
Region, adding to the list of cancer services available to patients in Durham and
surrounding Regions.
The MDRCC is a 90,000 square foot facility making it one of the largest in Canada.
** The MDRCC has increased cancer care and treatment capacity considerably
with Chemotherapy by almost 100%.
Since opening, the Cancer Centre provides:
** Care for 400 patients a day.
** Care for 4,200 patients a year.
** 27,500 radiation treatments a year
** 21,000 chemotherapy treatments a year
